PLUG – by David Levy – A Science Fiction Short Movie

This is the first film from internationally famend designer and concept artist, David Levy (Tron legacy, Prometheus, Ender’s Game, Tomorrowland, Avatar2).

“On a post-apocalyptic world, Leila Dawn (Natalie Floyd), is the last human survivor. Raised by Robots after humanity deserted the planet they destroyed with nuclear warfare, Leila can’t forget her mother and father nor ignore her craving to search out other natural life. A hunt she sets out on with a Military Unit, Marker (Lex Cassar), leads Leila to find the truth she’s been denied—a reality that sparks her ultimate quest.

The short movie is the first 15 minutes of a Sci-Fi television series Levy has outlined and hopes to film. Not like the extremely VFX-ed Sci-Fi movies inundating audiences right now, PLUG is a return to 1970’s classics like Star Wars and Mad Max with a gritty universe created from mainly real props and locations. Watch it, love it, share it!

Loved this film. Reminded me more of the anime Appleseed, than anything
    else.

+Jayce Hudson Oh thank god someone else thought this, the entire time I
thought she was gonna start calling the robot friend Briareos.

These days it seems like just about anybody with a few bucks and a fast
computer can put together a short film. Too bad they can’t teach writing.
“Your people are people”? How about, “Your people are flesh and blood, not
wires and circuits.” Just as a random example. And the timing of the weapon
malfunction was off, needed more signs IE sparks etc. Not horrible though.
I always value writing over effects. You’d be surprised how little it takes
to achieve the suspension of disbelief. And you always need to empathize
with your main characters. The bitch just comes off as just that, a bitch.

+FuZZy961 You assume much about my motive or nature. I find it odd in being
nothing you claim of me to be represented in my direct and forward opinion.
You seem truly distraught however given the negative and long winded length
of your post. If you would like to discuss the matter personally please
I.M. me and we can discuss the core of your butthurt.

    • FuZZy961 on November 27, 2015 at 12:23 pm

      +Jac Sperle
Well you have a common problem, where you seem to think you need a Masters
degree before you’re entitled to express an opinion.

This is just YouTube buddy, you should have stopped your comment at ‘Your
opinion is noted’, the rest where you shit on his opinion because he didn’t
      display his credentials is unnecessary.

I suggest you first establish the point in time in which you became king
dick and were bestowed upon the authority to judge YouTube comments. I must
have missed that memo which declared we must write a whimsical piece to
unlock the achievement and earn the title to critique YouTube comments.

By all means, make a counter argument about what point you disagree with
his statement, but don’t give me this horse shit about what we must first
establish, and receive permission on the merits of a fucking can before
giving an opinion. This isn’t North fucking Korea you fucktard. Its YOUTUBE

Check your own tin can first.

    • Jac Sperle on November 27, 2015 at 12:23 pm

Your opinion is noted, and soon washed away by the majority of the people
who loved this bit. I suggest you first write a whimsical piece and have it
established in the community before critiquing that of others. It’s hard to
find credit in the words of one who shits in a tin can.

    Just discovered these shorts and
P.L.U.G. is the best one I’ve seen so far. The premise of mech’s taking
care of a human until she finds out “the truth” is an intriguing idea that
should be expanded on. Good production values here.

Am I the only human on earth who imagines a bright future full of progress
and glory? Everyone seems to think the world’s going to shit, except for
me. The world WILL go to shit if a shitty world is the only thing the
masses can imagine. Lets think up some new inventions to deal with the
potential causes of a shitty world, eh? 😉

That being said, the short film was still good. It looked like Daft Punk
and Mad Max had a baby and named it Destiny. ;)

+cobra509 kimanicoates Humanity is coming along nicely except for climate
change and Every woman in Africa seeming intent on having 5+ kids. The
media with their fear mongering want you to think its the end times but
other than ISIS, which is a small regional conflict, the state of things is
going well. My Mom was born in London in 1940 in an air raid subway station

Anyone else feel like the Robots are inspired by Tau? Anyone?

  41. MrBadKitty on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

so did i just watch Appleseed Zero? EMP takes out complex eletronics, not
guns or 2-stroke engines. If you are going to rip off: Warhammer 40k Tau
long rifles, Appleseed’s Briareos, Borderland cantina, Matrix and
Terminator you might want to try a bit harder. At least do your research on
what weapons would work post EMP blast.

the dues ex machina is about the same level as a harry potter book. Least
the CGI was good. AND why does everyone in the future listen to Dubstep?

    • MrBadKitty on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

      +Snow Stranger
it turns out good in the end for them, look at WALL-e

    • Snow Stranger on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

Hahaha very true! But I think the cockroaches got the short end of the
      stick in that scenario.

    • MrBadKitty on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

      +Snow Stranger
my guess is because you dont have to pay royalities with dubstep. You can
have the zombie outbreak, alien invasion or whatever world ending you
choose, but there will only be 2 things that survive: cockroaches and the
      MPAA (GEMA here in Germany).

    • Snow Stranger on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

Applseed Alpha has it, and this feels more inspired from that one
specifically. I’m partial to a few genres of dubstep but its way overused
at this point, like you said why is every future person listening to
      dubsep?!

    • MrBadKitty on August 24, 2015 at 8:24 am

      +Snow Stranger
thank you, at least there’s no dubstep in Appleseed

  43. Valentin Koscheyev on August 14, 2015 at 8:23 am

An emotionally expressive female in a film? One NOT trying to be a man &
actually feminine? Insanity! This then makes this film not science fiction
    but fantasy.
And yes – humans should be eradicated so that Nature takes over.
We are a corrupt pestilence of insane, war mongering things of
contamination & destruction. What they do not kill they cripple or
slaughter, decimating what was reflective of innocence & vitality. What
they do to earth, air, & water should be punishable by erasure and/or by
    banishment.

TV guided missiles in 2087? Unlikely. Interesting concept, but I don’t
think it would get more than 1 season on any network if it gets picked up.
Sci-fi shows can’t hold an audience these days. Just look at shows like
Ascension, Terra Nova, etc.. Done well, and I really liked them, but they
got cancelled because there were not enough viewers.

    • Geeking On Games on August 5, 2015 at 8:51 am

+Carlos Hernan Jaramillo Solarte no i was talking about conceptual art not
budgets. But even so, you have The Man From Earth,Cube,The
Prototype,Moon,Insidious…but anyway you cant expect big budget even from
      the best indie sci-fi movie.

    • Carlos Hernan Jaramillo Solarte on August 5, 2015 at 8:51 am

+Geeking On Games you are aware that you are comparing large productions
with a short film?, not belittle the work of these concep artists, maybe
they do not work for Hollywood, but not mean they are not good.artist.
you’re some kind of concep artist?

    • Geeking On Games on August 5, 2015 at 8:51 am

+Carlos Hernan Jaramillo Solarte not at all. Star Wars, The Fifth Element,
World of the Worlds, Terminator, Alien, Tron, Blade Runner…that’s good
work of conceptual art, in my opinion. Man of Steel and Superman, great
movies, diferent in many aspects, but they aren’t annoying

    • Carlos Hernan Jaramillo Solarte on August 5, 2015 at 8:51 am

Good Plot, Excellent choice of characters except the girl they had. At
first I thought the robot acting was poor then I realized the actress was
out of place. Her acting was horrible to say the least. Besides that the
only flaws were the CGI looking really horrid at times and the occasional
over pace of action when not necessary. But a great short even with the
    flaws.

Similar aesthetic to Ghost in the Shell, but too heady androids.

  87. Gammel Prutte on May 30, 2015 at 2:24 am

Two comments — waving the camera about is ok in small doses, provided you
can still actually see what is going on. If you can’t see what’s happening,
there’s not much point in filming it.
And the raucous music at the end was inappropriate, imho.
    Otherwise, great stuff and thanks.

  88. Naduk Kerensky on May 29, 2015 at 11:34 pm

not bad, liked the idea, a slightly more “peaceful” take on the terminator
concept, lots of ideas to work with and many places it could go (where did
the ships go for instance, what fate awaited humans, what is plugs
redundancy plan for humans return, ect) however the over all feel was over
the top amateur, way way way to much time spent looking at black screens
(sara connor style voice over would of worked much better), completely
terrible dialog (hostile response to a robot guard seems like a fast way to
be killed) zero effort establishing connection with characters (we spend
more time getting to know black screens than we did marker and pals before
getting shot up), complete lack of context with bar, did leila live there?
were marker and her just passing through? are they wanderers? why are
robots hanging out in a bar? ,many good opportunity’s for marker show
relationship with leila hint at history to help us believe she cares about
him for later scenes were missed (hey you remember that time we…..), high
speed chase was unnecessary droid could likely run faster than that
motorbike or just track its trail with advanced optics, could go on for
days, but you get the point

  89. Mechknight73 on May 29, 2015 at 10:45 pm

I hope one day we get to see an expansion of the story. There is so much
crap being churned out of Hollywood, that they seem to have run out of
ideas altogether, bar a handful of producers and directors I especially
love the fact that you didn’t overdo it with CGI A good premise for a
story, just would like to see more of said plot in a full length movie

    • Giant Squidy on May 14, 2015 at 5:16 am

+PandaWTG This could be very true. Her acting isn’t far off from a Sci-Fi
channel actress, in my opinion (which isn’t necessarily bad). But, I’ll
definitely admit I’m guilty of nit-picking every movie to shreds, so this
may not have been an issue for many viewers. Science fiction is my favorite
genre if it’s done correctly, but this just comes down to personal
preference of what a viewer wants. The overarching dread the beginning of
this film presented was quite interesting, but I feel it devolved itself
immediately with a character that seemed so generically “bubbly” if that
makes sense. Maybe that was the purpose to juxtapose a character such as
this in such a bleak setting, but with a mythos that is so dreadful I found
it strange most human characters behaved as such. But, once again, I’m hard
to please. And, for a [presumably] low budget and independent film, I
      couldn’t have done better myself.

    • PandaWTG on May 14, 2015 at 5:16 am

+Giant Squidy Yeah, her acting is a little touch and go. Maybe she’s a
      first time actress?

  118. Azmar Nox on April 16, 2015 at 11:04 pm

A great big mess of (as stated) 70’s cliches and ’80s crap production.
Lame setting or bad location choice, probably both.

The bots were far to anthropomorphised – they don’t need hands, or even
humanoid shapes, and had no function at that machine bar in the middle of
absolutely no where. If humans ‘left the planet for machines to fix’ it
should look like they’re trying to fix it.

And her little detector did not point at every plant in range? They’re
alive, right? Without a circular ecosystem plants in an environment like
that (Outback Aussieland somewhere) would be dead. Arachnids would be dead
(and they don’t exist in Aussieland anyway. Black scorpions are not
terribly poisonous, though they hurt like hell). And human children with
no farm, no protein (meat from prey, i.e. living animals, or some manner of
farmed plant like peanuts), and with machines serving no function besides
sitting at a seedy bar, would be very dead.
Heck, there was not even any sort of source for that green goo (like, no
solar panels, wind turbines, drilling stations).
Standard post-apoc trope: Motorcycles and dune buggies. With internal
combustion engines, but that run off of green goo batteries. (That’s why
Mad Max is such a crock of feces – in a world that’s fighting mad over
fuel, why drive the LEAST fuel efficient machines imaginable??)

And we won’t go into the SFX/CG – that’s a budgetary thing and they
    probably were pretty limited.

    • Jalent Core on April 16, 2015 at 11:04 pm

second thought, mankind does deserve mass extinction, we are not fit to be
the heralds of this planet, all we do is destroy it, individually we can
change, but collectively 6.8 billion people need to make huge strides and
changes to save this half dead planet, otherwise our own genocide can be
the only solution, humanity is too stubborn to do anything until it is far
too late to react, they think just because they dont see the decay of earth
that it doesn’t exist, yet it is already turning against us in its
desperate attempt to save itself from the cancer which is mankind.

Not enough old-school sci-fi like this around these days. The robots were
    very human.. Quite unique.

Wow! Amazing work, that was probably the best short sci fi I have seen in a
long time. This should absolutely be feature length!

  188. Brett W. McCoy on December 11, 2014 at 12:58 am

I liked this a lot. Light on CG and heavy on real sets and interaction.
Definitely reminded of older 70s and 80s flicks like Damnation Alley and
Road Warrior. Hope to see more.

COUNT HOW MANY POST-APOCALYPTIC [EARTH] FILMS ARE EMERGING LATELY….
    WONDER WHY THE HOPELESSNESS

  192. Jeff McVey on December 4, 2014 at 10:32 am

Not a bad flick. I look forward to more episodes. Keep’em coming.

  193. David A. on December 2, 2014 at 5:11 am

I can’t get the complaints… In no way!
I really enjoyed this film a lot! I kinda fell in love with the look: Nice
costumes, perfect lighting, overall a nicely used looking environment. The
story also ends with a “terrible” cliffhanger, the film is too short and
ends exactly where you don’t want it to end. That’s what I call a teaser!
The only thing not quite matching were the CGI-effects, which are the only
element in the film that gives it away as a non-Hollywood product. What’s
the spider bot supposed to do in the first place? He was not designed for
    fighting, that’s obvious.
I also liked the vehicle action, there really is a Mad Max feeling to it,
    that I like a lot.

One of the best shorties I ever watched! More please!

Really enjoyed this short. Hope you make a part 2!!

  195. DementedCyborg on December 1, 2014 at 8:19 am

this was phenomenal. everything from the concept to the script to the
acting was great. my only problem was that the dialogue sounded a little
bit forced, but at this point i feel like i was just looking for problems.
it was a great film and I am definitely showing it to all my friends. good
    work.

  196. Alex Butts on November 29, 2014 at 7:52 pm

The creator of this is an amazing person I do wish there was more, because
    it was so good

I’m rather surprised by the criticisms. I very much enjoyed this short and
look forward to future episodes around this premise. I thought the
production values were very high for a short broadcast on YouTube. I’ve
seen horrible shorts get excessive praise even when it’s Vfx and designs
were amateurish at best. I hope to see more from this team.

+midas12354783 Yea, I hate the Transformer movies. They have little to no
character development, and crappy stories. I’ve heard that Michael Bay
isn’t making any more Transformer movies. I hope that’s true.

Short films are usually done by people without money, therefore it should
be a showcase for story and dialog.(Something that doesn’t cost money but
imagination) Which pretty graphics is fine, but overemphasizing that only
leads to God of Travesties like “The Transformers” etc. when people forget
that watching a story is actually about the plot and not the look, This
leads and has lead to our modern lack of imagination we have in Hollywood..

    • Andrew Gordon on November 8, 2014 at 12:35 pm

Well a lot of times, filmmakers don’t have a story, or at least a story
that is easily interpreted. Short films are often an expression of an
emotion the filmmaker feels, and they try to portray that through a short
film. In this case, this was a teaser. By the definition of a teaser, they
aren’t supposed to give you anything

    • lurkerrekrul on November 8, 2014 at 12:35 pm

+Andrew Gordon I can understand that they don’t have the money to make a
feature-length movie. What I don’t understand is why almost all the short
film creators just make a fragment of a story. They know that it’s very
unlikely they will ever continue the story, but yet they all write it as if
it’s just the first installment of a much longer work.

A film doesn’t have to be long to tell a complete story.

+Eyoldaith well his name “waz wazz” says a lot about his IQ, and his only
way of insulting someone is by telling them to do something he probably
does every night to himself so…he’s crazy XD
